Hermanus is situated in the heart of the Whale Route, just 100km from Cape Town on the Cape Whale coast. It has developed from a rustic fishing village into one of the world's best whale-viewing sites. With its unparalleled scenic beauty, modern infrastructure, upmarket shops and endless adventure options, it's little wonder that Hermanus has grown in size and popularity during the last decade. Hermanus has the status of being the best land-based whale watching destination in the world. Southern right whales visit Walker Bay from June through to December and can be viewed from aboard a boat, an airplane or the shore. Hermanus is home to the world's only Whale Crier who blows his kelp horn when whales are spotted along the central sea route. The Whale Festival has also become a feature on the town's calendar. Hermanus is a cosmopolitan town but has retained some of its historical fisherman's village heritage. A number of craft markets sell a range of interesting wares, a marimba band frequently adds a vibrant atmosphere on different occasions and the old harbour with its restored fishing boats gives a glimpse of times past.

The Fernkloof Nature Reserve with over 1600 identified species of indigenous fynbos offers stunning hikes, a mountain bike trail and a short wheel chair accessible path. Examples of flowers in bloom are on display at the reserve's centre. Porcupines, baboon, klipspringer, grysbok, genet, mongoose and otter, and over 92 species of birds can been viewed in the reserve.

The secluded, rock-sheltered coves and the long, pristine beaches are perfect for strolling, bathing and surfing. Further outdoor activities include cycling, kayaking, paragliding, scuba diving, canopy tours, quad biking and horse riding. Hermanus also has facilities for tennis, squash, bowls and fishing. Shopping is a treat with interesting local art, jewellery, pottery and crafts to choose from.

The Hemel-en-Aarde valley is home to world-renowned wineries. This picturesque valley with cool maritime climate and excellent soil composition produces some of the most unique varieties and interesting blends found in the world.
Shark cage diving provides an adrenaline fix for adventure lovers and kayaking trips on the sea or lagoon can be booked. Fernkloof Nature Reserve offers a range of spectacular walks among the fynbos.
