Pilgrim's Rest South Africa

Pilgrim's Rest is situated on the magnificent Panorama Route of the Mpumalanga province. The entire village is a tourist attraction and was declared a National Monument in 1986. Today, Pilgrim's Rest is a living monument to the feverish gold rush days of the late 1800s. There are many ways to explore the charms and history of Pilgrim's Rest. Take a 5-hour interactive tour with 'The Friends of the Pilgrim's Rest Museum', where guides, in period costume, take you on a journey through a day in the life of a gold prospector. The tour begins at the Diggings Site just outside the village, which is a recreation of how the whole valley once looked during the gold rush. You can explore the Gold Commissioner's hut, prison tent, transport wagon, sluice box, waterwheel, steam engine and stamp battery. And then you can pan for gold and you even get to keep the gold 'bits' you find. You then visit Alanglade Museum, which was once a mine manager's elegant Edwardian house. Pilrgrim's Rest is home to a wide variety of shops selling antiques and collectables, as well as arts, crafts and curios. You can also take a walk between uptown and downtown to see a number of historic buildings and sites. The attractions of Pilgrim's Rest are not limited to gold. You can explore the surrounding area in a 4x4; or try a variety of outdoor activities including fly-fishing, golfing, horse-riding, overnight hiking and hot-air ballooning. But only the bravest will head out to Graskop and experience the adrenaline rush of the world's highest cable gorge swing with a 68 meter freefall. Or fly across the 80 meter high gorge on the High Wire slide. Both are located at Panorama Gorge in Graskop, about 15 kilometers from the village.
